SANYA, China — After winning on Friday morning, Angie Akers and Tyra Turner of the United States beat Kuhn and Zumkehr in the Sanya Open to advance to the semi-finals. Later on the same day, Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy defeated Akers and Turner of Team FUBAR. Play continued through the weekend where Team FUBAR went on to face Kessy and Ross who advanced to the finals by defeating the third-seeded Akers and Turner 22-20, 19-21 and 15-11 in 60 minutes.

In the women’s bronze medal match Akers and Turner scored a 21-15 and 21-15 win in 36 minutes to avenge their earlier setback to Cicolari and Menegatti. The win earned Akers her first-ever FIVB World Tour medal and a share of the $15,000 third-place prize. Turner won the bronze medal at the 2008 Sanya Open win Nicole Branagh.

For FUBAR Release:

John Hyden and Sean Scott had their work cut out for them this weekend at the AVP Crocs World Challenge in Glendale Arizona. It was Team USA vs. Team Brazil in a 3 day medal round that ended in disappointment for Team FUBAR. “Every game was close in points this weekend against the Brazilians”, said Johnny “FUBAR” Hyden. “We just couldn’t seem to close the rounds out on top, and Team Brazil played very well; regardless, we had a great weekend in beach volleyball to finish up the 2009 season”.

While its the end of the 2009 season for the AVP and time for John and Sean to rest and reflect on their their amazing first season together, Angie Akers and Tyra Turner will continue to play Internationally on the FIVB World Tour.

It was a fast and furious weekend of partner exchanges, severe heat and lots of Malibu beverages at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas. Team FUBAR was in fine form with Angie Akers and Sean Scott playing hard to try and make it through the pool play. In the end it was Tyra Turner and Johhny “FUBAR” Hyden who although did not earn enough points to continue on for a title, they were picked by Jennifer Kessy and Phil Dalhausser as their preferred partners for the finals.

The AVP put on a spectacular show this weekend with celebrities on hand to enjoy the festivities. Michelle Lee, stuntwoman and actress made an appearance along with Jonathan Odgen, retired NFL tackle for the Ravens.

Johnny “FUBAR” Hyden and “Sir” Sean Scott have done the impossible and beat the #1 team and Olympic Champions for the 4th time in back to back AVP events. This weekend in Mason, Ohio marks the 7th time the #1 and #2 seeded teams met, each looking to come away with the rubber match win. However, it was not to be for Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers as Team FUBAR played hard to sweep the Olympic Champions 21-16, 22-20 in straight sets.

John Hyden and Sean Scott played some of the best beach volleyball of their career this weekend in Cincinnati in front of a very enthusiastic crowd. This is the first time either of the two players have ever taken down a championship in Ohio. “This win means so much to Sean and I, probably the biggest moment in our careers. We have been facing Todd and Phil almost every final and we really wanted to prove to ourselves and our fans that we could win under pressure. These guys push us hard every single time we meet them, so the mental and physical preparation is grueling. To finish the season 4-3 over Phil and Todd is a really big deal to us as we wanted to finish the regular season on a high note”, said Johnny “FUBAR” Hyden of Team FUBAR.

This final Tournament of Champions marks the end of regular season play for the AVP, with two final events in Las Vegas, Nevada and Glendale Arizona during the month of September.

AVP Press Release

Second-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott claimed the men’s title at the AVP Crocs Cup Championship Kentucky Grilled Chicken Chicago Open, with a 21-17, 15-21, 15-12 win over 2009 Crocs Cup Champions, 2008 Olympic gold medalists and top seeds Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers. On the women’s side of the bracket, top seeds Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs advanced to the semifinals undefeated, while sixth-seeded Kerri Walsh and Holly McPeak remain in sight of the title despite dropping into the Contenders’ Bracket with a Round 3 loss.

In the men’s final, Hyden / Scott snapped Dalhausser / Rogers’ 34-match, five tournament win streak, largely due to Hyden’s 20 digs and Dalhausser / Rogers’ combined eight errors.

“I felt really energetic, kept the fire, kept the focus,” Hyden said. “Everything opens up, and you can get a little higher, a little faster.”

“He was on fire,” Rogers said of Hyden. “He played pretty darn good.”

Saturday’s final marked the sixth time in 2009 that Hyden / Scott have faced Dalhausser / Rogers in AVP finals. Each team has won three times.

To advance to Saturday’s final, Hyden / Scott defeated tenth-seeded Pedro Brazao / Matt Prosser 21-17, 21-16, while Dalhausser / Rogers eliminated third-seeded Jake Gibb / Sean Rosenthal 23-25, 21-15, 15-5.

Though Hyden / Scott claimed the Chicago Open title, Dalhausser / Rogers claimed the season-long Crocs Cup Championship title. The Crocs Cup awards $75,000 in bonus money to the top four teams of each gender based on their top ten 2009 finishes as a team through this weekend’s tournament. Dalhausser / Rogers won the $45,000 first-place bonus, while Hyden / Scott claimed the $15,000 second-place prize. Gibb/Rosenthal took third and $10,000, while John Mayer / Jeff Nygaard finished fourth and went home with $5,000.
